Vengeful marlin catches a boatload of fishermen

If you think fishing's boring, take a look at this series of snaps taken the moment a giant marlin takes revenge on every big game fisherman who has ever cast a line and sinks this pristine boat off the coast of Panama. How did it go so wrong? One report explains that the captain was reversing full throttle to chase down the fighting mega-fish when he fell and lost control. Marlin Magazine reports that the awesome creature escaped and all passengers were rescued, but the poor boat sank into oblivion. Facebook fishing enthusiasts are mystified, asking, "Why didn't they cut the line?" But as Marlin Magazine simply puts it, "Marlin Wins!"

Eat Your Veggies? Be Careful

'Healthy' veggies make us sicker than meat each year
According to the CDC, lettuce and other leafy greens are responsible for 2.2 million food-borne illnesses every year. And to make matters worse, produce (including fruit, vegetables and nuts) sickens 4.4 million people annually. Bet your mom didn't know that when she ordered you to eat your veggies as a kid. In comparison, contaminated meat causes just 2.1 million illnesses per year.
Huh............

Building Falls Into Sinkhole

Building Complex in China Gets Swallowed  by a Giant Sinkhole

Watch a building complex get swallowed by a giant sinkhole

Here's something you don't see every day (and thank goodness for that): an entire building complex suddenly sucked into the ground. Several multistory buildings in China's southern Guangdong province were swallowed up by a sinkhole Monday. Construction of a nearby subway line may have made the ground unstable, according to reports. Luckily, workers were aware of the instability before the collapse, and the area had been evacuated, so there were no casualties.

The 10 Worst Things You Can Do to Your Car

Like the human body, ignoring even the smallest signs of trouble in your car's performance can lead to trouble down the road.

And some missed signals cost more than others.

A new report by CarMD.com Corporation  details exactly which maintenance mistakes can cause the most damage.
Here are the top 10:

1.  Putting off recommended / scheduled maintenance

2. Ignoring the “check engine” light

3. Not changing the oil, or not having it changed on time

4. Not checking tire pressure

5. Neglecting coolant, brake, transmission and other fluid services

6. Continuing to drive when the vehicle is overheating

7. Not changing fuel and air filters

8. Having unqualified shops service your vehicle

9. Using generic aftermarket parts instead of original equipment manufacturer (OEM)-quality parts

10. Trying to service your own high-tech vehicle

The best example of the snowball effect of missed car repairs is the air filter. It costs about 20 bucks to replace, but if left alone, a dirty filter can bust oxygen (02) sensors in cars, which cost as much as $250 to replace. And when the sensor fails, you'll first see your gas mileage plunge, then possibly wind up with a $1,000 bill to replace your  catalytic converter.

No. 3 deserves special attention, as well. Technicians say ignoring oil changes is the "single most damaging  car maintenance item that their customers neglect that they wish they could change," according to CarMD.

The trouble with dirty oil is that it doesn't jive well with the high-tech engines in today's modern vehicles, according to  Art Jacobsen, CarMD vice president, and can lead to engine failure if left ignored for too long.

The old go-to rule for oil changes was to refresh every 3,000 miles. But most experts agree drivers should go by the schedule their car's manufacturer dictates instead.

Hypersonic 'SpaceLiner' Aims to Fly Passengers in 2050

A hypersonic "SpaceLiner" would whisk up to 50 passengers from Europe to Australia in 90 minutes. The futuristic vehicle would do so by riding a rocket into Earth's upper atmosphere, reaching 24 times the speed of sound before gliding in for a landing.
SpaceLiner passengers would have eight minutes to experience the rocket launch before they reached an altitude of about 47 to 50 miles (75 to 80 kilometers). That falls short of the 62-mile (100-km) boundary considered the edge of space, but even a suborbital flight would allow SpaceLiner to glide back to Earth at hypersonic speeds of more than 15,000 mph (25,200 kph).
The rocket-powered design stands out compared with other proposed hypersonic jets, which feature new air-breathing engine concepts. European aerospace giant EADS previously unveiled a hypersonic jet concept that would rely mainly upon air-breathing ramjets to reach cruising speeds of Mach 4 — faster than the supersonic Concorde's Mach 2 performances but far slower than the SpaceLiner's Mach 24 goal.

SpaceLiner's European project planners say their reliance upon proven rocket technology could allow their vehicle to fly sooner rather than later. They plan to use liquid oxygen and hydrogen rocket propellants so that the rocket engines leave only water vapor and hydrogen in the atmosphere.

Ease your cold and flu symptoms - with dessert?

It has been a record flu season so far, and people are doing whatever they can to avoid coming down with the ailment. But what can you do if you already have it?

Enter Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams. The Ohio-based company's Influenza Sorbet won't cure the flu, but it will definitely make you feel better, said Jeni Britton Bauer, the company's founder and president.

The Influenza Sorbet contains honey, ginger, orange juice and lemon juice. And if that weren't enough, it also has Maker's Mark bourbon and cayenne pepper.

The result is a soothing sorbet with kick. It might not be what the doctor ordered, but Bauer said it works.

The sorbet also contains pectin, which coats the throat. The honey lubricates the throat and the cayenne pepper helps clear the nasal passages, she added.

The result is a product that soothes irritated throats and relieves scratchiness, helping suffers get needed sleep, she said.

With the severity of this flu season, interest in the Influenza Sorbet is soaring, Bauer said.

But the sorbet is more than just a home remedy. It tastes good, she said.

"It is really delicious," she said. "The cayenne doesn't have flavor, it just has the kick, the physical property of the heat, and then all of the other ingredients are just so perfect together. You can just imagine it as a cocktail. A whiskey sour plus ginger.

"All those things go together so well and it really tastes great," she said, adding that she had customers who buy it when it's available and store it in their freezers so they can have it during the summer.

But don't just take Bauer's word for it. One food blog waxed poetic about the Influenza Sorbet.

In a 2009 post on thekitchn.com, a review said the sorbet was so good it was "almost worth getting the flu for."

Jeni's Influenza Sorbet will be available through February and into March. It retails for $12 per pint and is sold at all Jeni's stores in Columbus, Cleveland and Nashville, as well as on the company's website.

Hockey's Back!

NEW YORK -- The National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players' Association reached agreement on the framework of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement early Sunday morning.

After a marathon 16-plus hour negotiating session at the Sofitel Hotel that began Saturday afternoon, the sides announced an agreement in principle shortly after 5 a.m. Sunday.

"Don Fehr and I are here to tell you that we have reached an agreement on the framework of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, the details of which need to be put to paper," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. "We have to dot a lot of I's and cross a lot of T's. There is still a lot of work to be done, but the basic framework has been agreed upon. We have to go through a ratification process and the Board of Governors has to approve it from the League side and, obviously, the players have to approve it as well. We are not in a position to give you information right now about schedule, when we are starting. It's early in the morning and we have been at this all day and all night, obviously. But, we will be back to you very shortly, hopefully, later today with more information in that regard."

The new CBA, which still must be drafted and formerly approved by both parties, would replace the agreement that expired Sept. 15. More to come.
