Wanted: Married Couple for Private Mars Voyage in 2018

WASHINGTON — A new nonprofit led by the world's first space tourist is mounting an ambitious plan to launch the first manned mission to Mars in 2018, a voyage that could include an adventurous married crew.

The project, led by American millionaire Dennis Tito — who paid his own way to space in 2001 — aims not to land people on the surface of the Red Planet, but to take advantage of a rare planetary alignment that would allow a relatively easy, quick flyby of Mars.

Tito announced the private Mars voyage plan today (Feb. 27) here at the National Press Club, where he held a press conference to launch his new organization, the Inspiration Mars Foundation, to back the mission.

Tito hopes to choose a space capsule and rocket from among those already on the market, and modify them to carry two people to Mars and back in 501 days.

And to combat the loneliness and isolation that would doubtless set in during such a mission, Tito is proposing something that's never been tried before: sending one male and one female, preferably a married couple.
The mission is designed to capitalize on a launch opportunity that opens in January 2018.

150-foot asteroid will buzz Earth, no need to duck

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A 150-foot-wide asteroid will come remarkably close to Earth next week, even closer than high-flying communication and weather satellites. It will be the nearest known flyby for an object of this size.

But don't worry. Scientists promise the megarock will be at least 17,100 miles away when it zips past next Friday.

"No Earth impact is possible," Donald Yeomans, manager of NASA's Near-Earth Object program at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., said Thursday.

Even the chance of an asteroid-satellite run-in is extremely remote, Yeomans and other scientists noted. A few hundred satellites orbit at 22,300 miles, higher than the asteroid's path, although operators are being warned about the incoming object for tracking purposes.

"No one has raised a red flag, nor will they," Yeomans told reporters. "I certainly don't anticipate any problems whatsoever."

Impossible to see with the naked eye, the asteroid is considered small as these things go. By contrast, the one that took out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago was 6 miles wide.

This disabled goldfish has the nicest, most ingenious owner ever

A less charitable person might have rejected, and disposed of, a goldfish that couldn't swim, but not the owner of this lucky fish. Just like a piglet in a wheelchair, this disabled goldfish looks quite content floating around in a nifty little harness that's been rigged up for its transport needs. The owner commented that while the fish looks "a little silly" in its sling, "it is better than lying at the bottom of the tank all day!" Show us a goldfish that wouldn't agree with that statement.

Must Be Marlin Time!

A 987-pound blue marlin by four anglers who were at least in their 80s.
Capt. Manuel Dominguez said the youngest angler in his charter group, which embarked from the Mexican resort city of Cabo San Lucas Saturday morning on what it hoped would be a brief and relaxing tuna-fishing excursion, was 82.
The excursion lasted a grueling 16 hours.
While aboard the 32-foot cruiser, Ziggy, Arizona anglers Sergent and Sandy Snagirett, and John and Edie Rayno, had caught several tuna before deciding to reel in the lines and call it quits.
It was 1:20 p.m.
But then something very large struck the line attached to the right outrigger. At the end of the line was a lure resembling a flying fish.
An epic battle was at hand, whether the old-timers liked it or not. All took turns with the rod but neither could make headway. (Neither angler is pictured in this post. They were said to have slept in and missed the weigh-in the next morning.)
The crew members helped with the reeling duties but even they could not turn the head of the valiant billfish.
Capt. Dominguez initially thought the fish was a giant tuna, but after 40 minutes it jumped. "I thought it was around 800 pounds because I've caught two around that size before," he told Tracy Ehrenberg, general manager of Pisces Sportfishing, which was first to blog about the catch.
They were still fighting the fish as the sun began to set over the Pacific.

Luckiest driver on Earth

Luckiest driver on Earth avoids 2 crashes in a row (in Russia, natch)
This is either the best or worst day of these guys' lives, depending on your point of view. Sure, they're probably still in shock from narrowly escaping getting killed twice — but hey, they're alive! This video is brought to us courtesy of the ubiquitous Russian dash-cam, and it makes us want to go take a Russian road trip, like, never. OK, heading out in these gloomy, icy conditions was probably a bad idea to begin with, but thanks to this benevolent truck driver (and maybe a trunkload of lucky charms) it turned out all right.
